today was my last day at my old job. monday i begin a whole new adventure in a whole new universe. (it’s really amazing how different the culture is from one department to the next) today my coworkers threw me a freaking fantastic star trek themed goodbye shin dig. all the foods had trek inspired names. my goodbye gift? the enterprise pizza cutter. but it’s my goodbye card that i really dig because it’s so geeky and clever. a stack of star trek novels, all signed inside the covers by the crew. while i won’t miss the job at all, and there are maybe a few people that i didn’t exactly click with, there are some truly wonderful souls in this office, and i will miss them very much.

i’m procrastinating, which is something i only ever do when i have to write a paper. right now i’d much rather be curled up with some Sherlock and hot tea, in my moriar tea tee, and dozily sneaking in a nap. tee hee.
but i’m making a silly post and not writing my paper.
i worked the scholarship competition this morning, which meant driving in wretched winter weather. but the kids are adorable in their nervousness and the parents are generally very fun to talk to. they’re so proud.
and then i watched Miss W go off the diving board 3 times and do the backstroke all on her own. and i was proud. she has taken to using the phrase “i love me some” … i quietly roll my eyes and wait for her to outgrow this particular grammatical atrocity. i suppose it is no more or less offensive than my lack of proper capitalization.
i’ve just this minute realized how late it is. we should have much protein for dinner. we eat so poorly on weekends.
i finally finished editing two batches of photos that have been waiting on me to find the time. the first was from my march 2011 trip to baltimore with the HZRT. the second was from my friend heather’s visit home last august. it’s nice to have that crossed off my epic list of Things That Need to be Done.
I never make ordinary posts any more. I post Random Wednesdays and the weekly Random Confederacy shot. Perhaps I need more specificity in my world. Perhaps not. I don’t think it makes a lick of difference either way. The point is I felt like posting. And here I am.
The book in the pic (which was shot with my phone, oooh the quality!) is The Other Side of the River. It is an interesting story, unfortunately the author puts too much of himself into it. I’m reading it for an urban politics class, much of which is centered around Detroit.
I visited my new desk in my new work home today and ended up chatting with my new boss for quite a while. It was a nice visit. I can’t wait to make the move. Three weeks!
It’s been snowing like crazy since yesterday, people were having trouble driving on campus. (We should have had a snow day!) I was crossing the road to leave and some students were trying to make it up the hill. I was moving cautiously as the road was slippery and I was nervous about getting hit by this carload of girls. My caution displeased them. The front passenger rolled her window down and actually said to me, “Are you fucking retarded?” I said “Really? That’s how you talk to people? Classy.” Mostly our students are of a much higher caliber, at least in my experience.
And now I’m home and it’s a snowy Friday and I have a three day weekend to look forward to. Knitting, studying, lots of tea, and maybe I can squeeze in a little Dr. No. (I’m alternately picturing Sean Connery and Daniel Craig as Bond as I read. Can’t go wrong either way, really)
“I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you’ll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you’ll make something that didn’t exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.” ~Neil Gaiman
Borrowed, but no less sincere.
This is my new favorite photograph of Miss W. The Mister shot it this week during a family gathering.
I read The Warrior by Jim Butcher yesterday, a Dresden novelette that appeared in the Mean Streets anthology (and in Side Jobs – a Dresden anthology). If you never read any other Dresden story, read this one. It is perhaps a little more obvious in places than the usual Dresden fare, but it is moving and it will make you think. Good words for a new year, without a doubt.
I hope you all have a wonderful 2012. I hope we do too.
