today was:
cleaning the hell out of the house
working on my thesis
homework
laundry that still isn’t done
pancakes and sausages and smoothies
too much heat but knitting through it anyway
thunder and (hopefully) imminent rain

at 3:30 this afternoon i could not take one more minute of my office, so i hid out back in the garden.

about 13 1/2 years ago i shot the photo on the left.  it was shot on film one summer afternoon.  it was nothing formal, i was just visiting the family.  i called it “achin’ to be” and it became one of my favorite portraits.  now he’s all grown up and headed off to college in the fall.  it’s so hard to believe that that much time has gone by.  his mother asked me to recreate the photo for his senior picture and i happily agreed.  i am so pleased with what we got.  maybe we’ll do it again in another 13 years.  congratulations, H, and best wishes.  i know you’ll do great things.

more than 25,600 service men and women lie in fort custer national cemetery.  every year, our little family spends the saturday morning of memorial day weekend there; we help place flags at the graves.  it isn’t much, but we think it’s important.  sunday afternoon we return to the cemetery for a ceremony that honors those who have given everything in service to our country.
